About Sogetsu Ikebana

Ikebana Sogetsu is one of the major schools of Ikebana, the Japanese art of flower arranging. Sogetsu, founded in 1927 by Sofu Teshigahara, is recognized for its modern and innovative approach to Ikebana. How To Study Ikebana

These classes are for people who are looking to study Sogetsu ikebana over multiple years and receive their certificates from the Japan headquarters. If you'd like to be a professional ikebana teacher or artist, these courses are for you. The Sogetsu certificates follow the textbooks from the Japan school of Sogetsu. Upon satisfactory completion of each book, you may apply for your certificate and your teacher will complete the application on your behalf to headquarters.

Please note that you will need to acquire 3 textbooks to enroll in the full course. Curriculum 1 & 2 requires "Sogetsu Textbook 1 & 2" and Curriculum 2 & 3 require "Sogetsu Textbook 3 & 4" and Curriculum 5 requires "Sogetsu Textbook 5"

Curriculum 1: Kakei-ho
In this course, the basics of Ikebana are studied through a method called Kakei-ho. Upon completion, application can be made for The First Certificate: Yonkyu.

Once you have mastered the basics of Kakei-ho, you will begin to learn about different Variation Styles. Upon completion, application can be made for The Second Certificate: Sankyu.

Curriculum 3: Composition and Line, Color and Mass
The new stage of free arrangement begins, apart from Kakei-ho. Upon completion, application can be made for The Third Certificate: Nikyu.

Curriculum 4: Material and Space
A higher level of expression is mastered by deepening understanding of the material and the space. Upon completion, application can be made for The Fourth Certificate: Ikkyu.

Curriculum 5: Technique and Creation
After completing all the studies of the four curricula, lessons continue for acquisition of a Teacher’s Diploma (to be officially certified as Sogetsu teacher). At this stage, the curriculum composed of the four key words “Technique,” “Materials,” “Placement,” and “Creation” learned to get a more confident foundation of skills, knowledge, and greater creativity. At the same time, training is required to gain mental preparedness as a teacher. Upon completion of Curriculum 5, application can be made for Teacher’s Diploma Fourth Grade (the first stage of teacher’s diploma).
